Holmes

Hi Dave, Couldn't make it out the other night, but I see it didn't make much difference. :-( I had been wondering about Holmes for the past week or so. Every now and then, when we had a break in the cloud cover, I would look up and could never find it, even when the right area of sky was clear. This...

Holmes in Stellarium

I have just realised that you can add new objects into Stellarium by editing a text file with the orbit description. I found a website with the following instructions for adding Comet 17P Holmes to Stellarium, This assumes you have a default installation of Stellarium Version 0.9.0 1. Close Stellari...

Very useful guide for absolute beginners

Hi guys,

I just came across this online.
Seems to be a good introduction to finding constellations etc.

Its a nice simple tutorial, obviously way beneath 99% of you guys but for anyone else starting out, it might be helpful.

Beginners tip

As a newbie, the most useful tool I found was http://www.stellarium.org/ [ AND ITS TOTALLY FREE ] It's actually quite easy to use, for someone starting out it has more than enough objects. I found it particularly useful after my first observing session to see if I could find some of the objects I wa...

A good night even by the standards of a newbie

I just want to say a collective big thank you to all the guys who came out for Fridays observing session. It was my first night and I think I was truly lucky in getting some excellent conditions. I didn't have a scope with me, just some rather dodgy binoculars, but it really didn't make a difference...
