Re: Mercury transit 9th May 2016

Hi Conn I took my 90mm Mak Cass and Seymour Solar filter with me that morning on my way to work in Ballina, Co Mayo. It was clouded out the whole morning. What I wanted to do was set up at lunchtime in the car park and do a bit of public outreach with the people at work. As luck would have it, it cl...

Re: Irish Astrophotography Exhibition Feb 2nd to feb 21st

Thanks Conn I think I have two images at the exhibition (I saw a very brief glimpse of the other image on the RTE news item). That is a cracking shot Dave. It does bring back good memories of the Turkey event. I am amazed at the press coverage this exhibition has received. Well done to all the organ...

Re: Lough Gur Dark Sky Park

Well done frank! Its a lot of hard work and dedication. There is an initiative to set up a dark sky reserve near Ballycroy in County Mayo (not far from Westport). It is being organised by a lady from GMIT who is trying to put in a submission. She is working with Albert on this. I was asked to give a...

Re: Observing Saturday 21st at Lough Gur

Ditto !
I was tempted to go last night but I was very tired. I did spend 30 minutes in the garden though with the 12" after I cleaned the mirrors.
It looked very clear last night. It must have been excellent at the Lough.

Re: observing Friday night 13th in lg?

I got back from Ballina just after 7pm but just too tired to go out again. Would be keen to go out tonight (Saturday) if the weather is this good.

Reprocessing old photos

I have been using the bad weather to hone my Photoshop skills on some of my old images. Having a decent monitor, new PC and Photoshop CC really helps. Here is an example of an old image of M42 that I reprocessed a different way using some new skills. https://www.flickr.com/photos/7703127@N07/1568212...

Hi Conn They are great value at the moment. You might even pick it up for less online. Harveys are not the cheapest. I picked up a 7D last September. They are $500 cheaper now. Kicking myself that I didnt wait and get a 6D. I still have the 450D which I find I use when travelling or out and about as...

Many congratulations to both of you :) You will have your hands full. Hope you wont need to sell all the astro gear. My wifes name is Sung hwa, which means "shining star"- so it was destiny for me  Naming kids with interesting names is a tough call unless you are a rock star or famous actor and...

Hi Colum For around the 300 Euro mark I would recommend the following scope http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/products_id/39/type/a An 8" dobsonian will give great views and years of fun. It will blow away a small refractor. You might even be able to pick one up second...

Sept meeting

Hi
It was nice to catch up with a few of the SAC members on Thursday night. Brings back some good memories. Flew back to Sydney on Saturday morning. Brought the weather back with me I'm afraid.

Sorry about the weather lads. It's was pretty crap here too. Got to see the transit through a few short breaks in the clouds. We ran an event at work. Most people who were prepared to wait for ten minutes or so got a brief glimpse. Hopefully catch up with you first week in September. I' m over for a...

I believe I am pretty well placed from here although I may have to bring the scope into work! I picked up an 8" Orion solar filter for the 8" SCT which should be perfect. Hopefully the weather will hold out. It has been crap here since before Christmas. My new scope has cobwebs in it due to lack of ...
