Lads, Thanks for the kind supportive comments. Dave, I have yet to try out the focal reducer on a full Moon -- did not get that opportunity last weekend. May I hold on to the F/reducer till next full Moon please? Yes, I will look at removing the micro focuser from the chain and see what difference t...

Saturn revisited
I was tidying my astronomy stuff in the computer and came across an avi file of Jupiter from Feb 18 , 2007. This was made with a Phillips web cam and a barlow and the LX 200R 10". So, with the help of Dave's notes on using Registax I decided to give the avi a 'real go'. I realise that I do not fully...

Sirius --Is it a tuba?
Again, from last nights outing -- I was practising the akward and difficult tast of trying to focus the camera and nearby happened to be Sirius. I thought Sirius would be too bright and shimmery to get a clean focus but then I got to thinking how would all the colour changing affect an image. I trie...

Little Dumbell in Perseus
I have only seen this object once before and while I was on a roll last evening I tried to image this. Like the double cluster, the Little Dumbell lies in the direction of Limerick City from my perspective and the sky is quite bright. Anyway, for what its worth, here's what I got. http://farm3.stati...

Perseus double cluster in f/6.3 focal reducer
Tried 'Double cluster' in Perseus to see if both could be captures in field of view. It was not possible without the foacl reducer. Again, star trailing but I was happy to see the field extent.

Great Orion Nebula with f6.3 focal reducer
Dave Lillis kindly loaned me his Meade 4000 series f/6.3 focal reducer/field flattner to try it out. With the LX200R 10" telescope and the Canon EOS 400D digital camera attached I found that the whole disc of the Moon was too big with this arrangement. I was not around last weekend when the Moon was...

Dave, The extra work you have done really made this image more striking -- even Rhea is clearer -- really great stuff. I remember reading something once about 'Rayleigh scattering' which I think has to do with the scattering of blue light and it seems to happen at the northern pole on Saturn. Presum...

Limerick Leader coverage of Lunar Eclipse 20/21 Feb 2008
I only got a look at this weekend's Limerick Leader a short while ago and I am pleased with the coverage/publicity they gave. Have a look at Page 4 in the features section. They used the 430 word script we presented and just as importantly, they used both the images I sent in -- one by Dave and the ...

Dave, thats an incredible image -- congrats and well done to both yourself and Frank. I see Rhea in the 7 o'clock position. Presumably the scope's motorized system is working well to achieve this. Still, I expect it took a fair bit of co-ordination between ye to achieve this. With the angle of the r...

No lens or eyepiece. I remove the eyepiece holder and camera lens I have the adapters/t-ring etc to connect the camera directly to the back of the scope. The ISS trails , Moon shots etc are giving me great experience/practice with the focussing. I still think I have not got it exactly right yet. Dav...

SAC club member Frank Ryan Jr gets image published
I was in Dublin this week and was killing time in Dundrum Town Centre and discovered an Easons shop. I could not resist a free read and had a look at the current edition of the magazine Sky at Night. Congratulations and well done Frank on a terrific image. I wonder if you would post it here (maybe y...

ISS passes -- some trail photos
With certain clear weather and plenty of passes this week I had a go at capturing some images. This one on 9 Feb was interesting because after I started the exposure I became aware of a plane coming from the opposite direction to the ISS which gave an impression of a 'head-on' collision -- the image...
