It is possible, mirror flop can cause some weird stars in images. The only way to find out is give it a go again with the mirror locked.

John, This is a great idea,
I'll arrange with Brendan to have power there.
I'll let you know how we stand on that before the next observing session.

Thanks for the encouraging comments. I have to think hard about the next steps --- seems to me that they would all be expensive. I have hesitated at the prospect of transporting the 10" up to the hill, mainly for the weight /car space problems I cant help you with the car issue but if you ever need...

Hi Conn, I'm glad you asked, i was thinking that M42 has alot of hidden detail in there, I think M82 could do with a bit higher S/N ratio, thats accomplished by a longer exposure, I ran them through some very simple and quick (60 seconds) processing in photoshop. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2053/...

I had a look through Conans 8" and the polar cap was visible as a whitish area, although not much else as it was low at the time.
As Frank said, the weather was fantastic all day, then as soon as the sun went down the clouds came in

Well, It was an interesting observing session, as soon as we go to the hill the clouds came in :x , we did have some gaps so we got a look at the moon and of the now very faded comet Holmes, now a shadow of its former self. It now looks like a faint arc of light near Mirfak in Perseus. Short of anot...

Observing session Tuesday, November 20th 2007

Sorry for the zero amount of notice on this. Some have expressed a wish to go up to the hill tonight so I sent out the text alert, we all want to see the comet again before it gets too faint. If you see this late, we'll still be up there if you wish to come along, just give me a ring on my phone at ...

Great images Conn, it really is great to see how big this comet ha become over the past few weeks.
As far as speed goes, this comet is going at an absolute crawl compared to your average comet.

Thats is a spec of dust on the cmos sensor in the camera, with very careful cleaning with something like a cotton bud you can remove it, you can make things worse if you 're not careful.
