Partial solar eclipse Jan 4 2011
Nice report in today's Irish Times (page 3). Well done Dave on getting your 'Limerick Report' mentioned including 'your elevated observing location' and it was great to see Seanie Morris of MAC and Galway Astronomy Club having their reports included also. Just wondering who the reporter Cian Nihil i...

Thanks for the texts. I am sorry that I cannot join you but I have to drive to Dublin early in the morning. It will be my luck if Dublin Airport does not open and my visitors cannot travel. I have just arrived home (10:45pm) and the fog is sufficient to have quite a dimming effect on the Moon but I ...

Yes, I believe it is one of the moons ... you can see it at that time on the Starry Night still. I know it is a common sight but it was my first time to visually observe a moon shadow. Well the snow has finally arrived to the Limerick region today and the next week is forecast to be very frosty/icy....

Hi John, Great to know there is some heat on our planet still. 30 degrees is quite hot and I am sure the Aussie mozzies are just as annoying as our European ones. No such problem here.. cabin fever was taking a hold of me (no golf either) so I was out with the scope last night from about 6 to 11. By...

Hi John, I have made many more attempts at imaging Jupiter with the web cam but have not improved on the one I posted here. I was out for 5 hours last night and the cold was like last January .. weather from N.E. with hard frost. (I was actually grateful to come in to the house to take a few phone c...

Thank you both for the comments. I realise there is a lot to learn and I have no doubt I will be back with some questions. Registax 5 is all I have some familiarity with and thanks to Jupiter and the Moon I am getting in some practice this week with the webcam. I do not have an equatorial mount so a...

NGC 7662 The Blue Snowball planetary nebula in Andromeda
I had an image of NGC 7662 from 30 Nov 2008 using the Canon 400D attached to the Meade LX200R 10". This was a 30" exposure and I was pleased with the detail captured. Here it is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16829187@N04/3197633486/ I know the web cam is really only suited to planets/moon but asI wa...

Well done.... a lovely image John. Great to see you are settling in down under. Well your image spurred me in to action and I took out the old Phillips Toucam on Halloween night and stuck it in the Meade 10". It was very damp and misty with fog building so, I got little time to get going and remembe...

Sunday Times article on 'swarming' by Prof. Mike Hinchey
There is a nice piece in today's Sunday Times (P6 main section) entitled ' Limerick scientist invents self sacrificing spaceships'. Anybody who was at the BSP will have heard his talk on this concept and I have to say it was absolutely captivating and one of the most innovative ideas I ever came acr...

Venus and Mercury
Tonight was clear and I tried to capture Venus and Mercury. I used the Canon 400D on a tripod and this is a 5 Sec. exposure at 100 asa with the basic 55mm lens at F5.6. url:http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4521872750_12bf1443b2.jpg:url Venus had about 92% of it's disc illuminated whereas Mercury ...
