Having taken the 'Quality Tour' I found the descriptions of the design features and materials used very compelling .... all in all a very powerful sell.
Why could telescopes like this not be produced in Ireland and exported worldwide? Look what Rosse achieved all by himself all those years ago.

The book shelf fell down
I have a few astronomy related books if anybody is interested in taking them. First one is a hard back copy of Patrick Moore's 'New Guide To The Planets' that was first published in 1993. Next is a hard back copy of 'Isaac Newton' by James Gleick that was first published in 2003. And finally I have ...

Thanks Dave and Frank for your advice. You both feel that dew bands are not sufficient and given that I am unlikely to be transporting the 10" to a remote site then maybe I should try the hairdryer for effectiveness first. I was out the night after the Io transit so I missed that last opportunity. I...

Inspired 'go' at Jupiter
Dave, thanks and well done on your talk last week on webcamming planets. I was inspired to try the Philips ToUcamPROII on the the LX 200R 10". I got dewed out by 21:30 ... never experienced so much dew to settle so fast. I was using the chart in 'Astronomy Now' and knew that Io was due to go behind ...

Jeepers Frank I read the last line of your post 'taken with GRAS020 in New Mexico' and in my ignorance (I did not know what GRAS020 was )I thought you had lifted it, so to speak, in order to show the asteroid's changing position as it crossed M31. But, having read your post on the IFAS site I now re...

Club eyepieces
I am considering investing in some eyepieces. What eyepieces have SAC got for club use?

Frank's Moon eclipse shot on Sky at Night
Congratulations Frank .... your Barcelona Moon eclipse image was broadcast on last night's programme. A good section of the programme was devoted to the eclipse but they saw very little through clouds from the beach near Selsey (I think that is near Patrick Moore's home).

I shall be a little further east at 40.98 N and 8.9E in Sardinia on the eclipse night and was trying to work out what the local time would be for this event. Frank mentioned the Nasa web site during his talk so from that I found that that Totality starts at 19:22 U.T. Is it correct to take U.T + 1hr...

SAC 25 years old today
I heard Dave mention that SAC was founded in 1986 and wondered what was the actual date. It is on the home page and happens to be today the 6th February 1986 ... here's to another 25 years.
I am sure it is not the oldest astronomy club/society in Ireland but it must be up there.

Frank, thanks for sharing the 'how to' info. I can see how valuable the sunspots were. The video nicely captures the very, very, very short transit and ergo the shutter speed calculation. Was the airport site chosen because of the triangulation of you, ISS and Sun positions? In other words was the t...

Lovely job Frank, I enjoyed that. It sounds like it was great fun to do and I suspect a fair bit of planning went into capturing this image. Did you have any prior info on ISO/shutter speed settings before attempting this? I did not realise that the predictions were that accurate. Does the predictio...

Very nice work Roy. I especially liked the Plough image with the pole/cable/tree. The handle of the Plough skirting the outline of the tree I thought was well constructed and effective. Also your image nicely caught the separation of Alcor and Mizar in the 'handle'. You might consider an image of th...
