NLC display, mid june
Hi all,
We were lucky to be given a nice display of noctilucent clouds tonight, on my way back home from a friends house tonight I saw a nice NLC display to the far north, the best I've seen in a while, I had the Canon handy so I took a few pics.
I used the standard lens the camera comes with, iso400 and 5 second exposures.
They were taken between 00.22 and 00.28, the display was visibly fading as I took these, I think I cought the tail end of a bigger display.
There were some nice wave like NLCs, they stood out nicely against the orange northern sunset glow.

The yellow flare is from a nearby light.
This is more indicitive of the size of the display, the visual view of it was dimmer then this image shows, hopefully we'll get more of these later on in the week.

Your report is up on Spaceweather Dave.
Well done. Its an excellent shot. Almost like waves or the impression
Of waves on sand at the beach. It must have been
really bright.
Dave if you add the tag shannonsideastronomy
To these on Flikr i can use them further in the site
Its easy do.
You just need to add the tag once and it will be
There to choose from again in the future.

Thanks Frank,
No probs, use what you want, I'm not on facebook so fire away.
It was a nice display, I only got the tail end of it though by the looks of it.
I used photoshop to enhance it abit, it wasnt as bright as the image suggests, but it was nice all the same.

There is still an NLC storm to be seen this year.
Martin Mc in the north reckoned it looked like the end of the world.
Some of the shots he took were jaw dropping.
It looks like it's clearing up here tonight so fingers x'd we can catch it.
Here is an image of a fine display on the 18th
I did a little photoshop work to get the scene to look as
close to what the eye saw.
I didn't over enhance it, in fact I could have stretched the image
to pull out more detail but I wanted to try and recreate what I actually saw.
Some of the finer detail shots show unreal detail.
I even saw active movement which was really striking.
I scanned the area for ages also with binos and it was an awesome sight.
