SAC Burren Starparty 2011

Post by Frank Ryan » Mon Oct 11, 2010 6:52 am

Well lads, what with no funding on the cards
the club can't afford to be flying in big name speakers.
No big name speaker means
The numbers would be probably halved
again from this years numbers so
logic dictates we don't run talks.
So let's get back to basics and reality here.
I propose we still run the starparty on Fri & Saturday night up at the Dolmen.
Hold a club style meeting in the ring

Fort media room (as it's FOC)
And have one speaker do a talk
(like the one I did this year)
So basically my idea is;
It's a club observing session (starparty)
on Fri & Sat night at the Dolmen.
Club style meeting on Sat night in the fort media room.
And that's it!

No flying in people.
No running around collecting people.
No huge hotel costs.
No renting projectors.
No hunting for prizes for draws.
No triple speakers gifts costs.
No strokes / panic attacks trying to pull it all together!!

well, it looks like it might have to be this way, at the end of the day, it actually makes life easier for alot of people.
Pity it has to be this way, but with the complete collapse of funding, we just cant afford it, unless moeny comes in from somewhere else.

A pity alright but not the end of the world.
In fact I'm glad because now we can concentrate on other more benificial projects.
Even if the money was there would any of the comittee that voted 'yes' for it take on responsibility
for organising it?
A rhetorical question but shur that's it.
The new 'starparty' format will have no organisation.
All we are doing is observing in the Burren on a
Fri and Sat night in Sept with a club meeting in
the media centre.
it don't get more basic than dat! :-)

feck it, on that basis out funding should be cuit in half, not reduced to zero.
i wonder where they are spending it, do you think we'd get 200-300e off them ??

Might not be as simple as that.
Let's say the Lisdoonvarna music festival
needs 5000 funding and they can't run it
on less than say 4000 and half the funding is no-good to them then SD are goin to
pull the cash from other 'less important' events
to make up the difference to have the more established bigger events go ahead.
I'll still be asking for funding for next year,
I'll be talking to her and will send her Robins article plus my own report so she can see what
it's all about.
I'll be calling for a committee vote at the next club meeting on nit having big name speakers
and just having a starparty.
Even without talks in the hotel we should still look for cash.

Even if we don't have a

That,s a shame. It was a good event but as you say these things cost money to hold and you can't expect the members to fund it all (unlike the Irish tax payer and the banks  ).
I guess with WSP back online there are now too many events in the country for a fairly fixed audience of 50-60 people. Any word on how WSP went this year, there is very little on the IFAS boards?

Hey Frank.

If its OK with you and the rest of the committee I'd like to draw up some plans that hopefully will get more funding and some sponsorship for the club. I will have them drawn up in time for the November meeting and if ye like them we could discuss going about getting it done.

Cheers Roy :D :D

Excellent stuff Roy!
We could well do with an injection of cash
especially with an observatory in the pipeline.
Spending it and more importantly,
our efforts, Flying in people from the US etc
for two nights is juts nuts.
The starparty can and will still go ahead
without the forigen speakers.
(and the huge cost / gamble to Sac)

Roy, just to clarify also.
The Committee hold 4 general meetings
a year.
If you have a few proposals for raising funds
you could create a post regarding this on these boards so we can begin discussing the ideas.
We will then include them in the agenda for
Novembers committee meeting.
