Free solar observing glasses for all club members

Post by Dave Lillis » Sat Feb 14, 2015 12:25 am

Hi All,
IFAS has organised that all participating clubs get a free batch of observing glasses for the upcoming partial solar eclipse, if we have them by the March meeting, we'll be handing them out, if not then we'll distribute them at the observing session of the eclipse.

For those not quite sure about them, you can look directly at the sun with them with the naked eye, you should be able to see the suns phase and see the progress of the Moon across the suns disk.
What you CANNOT do is look at the sun through a pair of binoculars or a telescope with them, the power of these instruments will burn a hole right through the filter and disastrous results, you might think this is obvious but I did see a person trying this with binoculars a few years back, he was quickly told that it was not a good idea ....

Each club is getting 100 glasses, I have to say I'm impressed with how ifas organised this one.

WOW. I've got to say I'm shocked.
Fair play to them. We're sorted so for glasses for the eclipse. Sweet.
Will the be bringing them to Galway do you know?
