Limerick Astronomy Club

Hi All,
We have a rare occasion today we're we can see the forecast and be confident of a clear sky tonight, so we're setting up at Roys place tonight at 6.30pm onwards.
Onwards means come along whenever it suits you.
Bring your scopes and whtever you like.
Ring Roy at 0866045332 for directions, its out the cratloe road from Limerick, it's a few miles out, not far..
The big moon in the sky makes going to the Burren not worth the effort tonight, so we're staying local.
Wrap up well, bring a flask of tea, its gonna be very cold!!!!

Good nite all round last nite..
Had a great turn out, Dave, Tom, Gerry
and myself turned up with our scopes..
We were joined by a good crowd
who came to have a look at what we were doin...
Dave and myself stayed out til about 2am
capturing Jupiter on the webcam...
Dave got some fantastic AVI's
cant wait to see the final processed images..
We got a good look at Io's shadow and someother
strange anomaly on the northern Eq belt....

Did you use the 20" to webcam?

Collimation was off slightly and
wasnt able to capture the avi at the settings
I wanted due to software issues.

Jupiter was absolutely stunning on the night, as for my images, not so good unfortunately, as it was the first time using this laptop/screen for imaging, I got the gain wrong (god damn rookie mistake ) and have ended up with the bloody onion effect in the jupiter images, so unless someone knows how to get rid of it, then I dunno, I'm trying every different processing route I can think of to reduce it, rgb seperation, photoshopping, experimenting with registax and avistack settings, but its not happening for me.
A pity, cos they'd be killer images otherwise, here's hoping till next time.

On the upside, the moon came out great!

Cool photos Dave, pity about jupiter. Did ye try and hunt down any of the lunar 100 on the night?

Well, I hadnt intended on working on the lunar 100 tbh.
As for Jupiter, I know where it went wrong, I havent imaged with this netbook before, the screen on this machine is quiet bright so I over dimmed the image, ended up with onion rings, its not something I can fix, I'll put up an image and you'll see what I mean.
Its no big deal, Jupiter isnt going anywhere.

are you using an older version of registax?
V5.1 has a De-Noise / De-Ring function in the Wavelet tab.

If you run it through that it may help.
The De-Noise function definitely works.
I'm sure the dering function works too, I've never had to try it mind
nor do I know what settings you'd need to have the dark and light side
set at but I presume start low and work up.
I'd also say not to have the regular wavelet settings anyway high
as this would interfere with the dering algorithm and may have and adverse outcome.

I havent done anything with it since last weekend, but did try this then and every other button and setting in there, using version6, no joy, the de-ringing function is for mild ringing in the disk, not for the concentric circles I got, its a right off, I'm not too bothered, there will be other nights soon hopefully where I can try again.
It was a long shot, but you just cant make a block of gold out of a lump of lead, no matter how hard you work at it.

That's a pity. Ah well, onwards & upwards!
