comet panstarrs observing session

Post by Dave Lillis » Sat Mar 09, 2013 12:29 am

Hi all,
As those who were at the meeting last week knows, we're going to try an observing session for the comet on wednesday night (13th march) as it passes near the moon, assuming the weather is good.
we going the ring road behind the car park at tescos on the coonagh roundabout, ,it gives a good western view, if its clear then it should be a fine view,,
it will need to be from about 6pm onwards..

Hey Dave..
I'm not knocking the carpark
in tescos but it's almost at sea level
and there are a lot of trees and barriers
at our level.. But I was talking to the P.R.O
of Shannon RFC and they have grounds in Coonagh
about 30-40ft above sea level.. I'll be speaking with
him again soon either today or tomorrow to let him
Know what the story is.. If any1 would like to see the
grounds just give me a buzz..

Cheers Roy :D :D

UPDATE

I just got off the phone with Tomas Healy(Chairman of Field & Development)
and he said we could use the roof on the club
house if we wanted.. It looks directly West and
has a clear view all around it, it's where the cameras
set up on match days so it has a great vantage point.

Cheers Roy :D :D

ok, I personally dont mind where we set up tbh, so long as its not far and has a decent horison and the public can come along.
we've announced this on facebook aswell, can the public come in if they want ?

Can you put up exact directions to this place.

I was thinking we could still
meet up at tescos carpark and
then head over to Shannon RFC
as it is literally across the road from tescos..

Cheers Roy :D :D

actually, tell you what, I'm not involved in deciding any of this, consult with the chairman/secretary/treasurer about this.
you want to change the venue, they''ll be the ones deciding on it

We could put
"meeting at tescos
carpark and then heading to
Shannon RFC club house in Coonagh"

On the club txt also you could leave my number on the club
txt for those later arrivals and I could meet them at
tescos and head back over...

Cheers Roy :D :D

well, it wasnt going to be me sending the text, 8)
I assumed the chair or secretary would be doing that...
again, you'd want to make sure the senior committee are happy if you want to change it, and update facebook aswell.
I only put it up on facebook as I'm one of the mods there.....
maybe I shouldnt have, dunno......... thats the job of the obs director, but since thats gone its now one of the senior committee members really.......

If ye don't mind I'll put myself
forward for sending out the club txt..
That's only of the committee members agree..
As for Facebook, there's no problem with updating
it Dave as you are still a Mod..

So as Dave suggested, I would like to put
Shannon RFC forward as a possible site
at which to observe the Panstarrs and lunar
Conjunction on Wednesday 13th March..

Cheers Roy :-) :-)

Lads not wishing to put a damper on exploring all possibilities but the Club needs to be careful as regards liability when it comes to observing sites. Questions of liability would definitely arise in the event of someone being injured.

I see mention of observing on the clubhouse roof!!!. I know we have insurance but insurance companies will always try to mitigate their liability or crawl away from any liability. Who would be liable? Someone falls off - who let him/her up there; where were the safety barriers; broken back; wheel chair bound bound for life!!

Let's stick to public locations with safety a top priority. If the club insurance did not cover such a disasterous happening, then our families may have to form a visiting committee to visit the SAC committee at whichever jail we were incarcerated.

Unfortunately I can't make it on Wednesday eve as I wear my LRC Chairmans hat at 7:30pm in LIT

Well said Simon. I think the public liability insurance cover ends at someone tripping over a telescope. :P
Regarding the site the rugby grounds in Coonagh sounds good. I was actually driving past there today and was thinking that somewhere down there would be better than the carpark funnily enough.

Regarding the FB updates, I usually tip away the odd time putting stuff up also and with the 3 of us doing it it should always be kept interesting. I added a photo the other day and re sent an invite to my friends list ans got a bunch more likes. It's a good resource for the club I reckon.

For me, I will be on the road back home from work so I can't make it.
Having said that I have located an awesome viewing spot

yea, liability would only cover a non member falling over club equipment in a public place, dont know if that covers us in a private site.

Anyway, again, dont mind where we go, so long as I'm not organising it :) 8)
I'll visit you in prison Simon, less senior committee members wont go to prison 8)
I only proposed the road behind tescos as Ive used it in the past. it has a good wide footpath, plenty of space to set up and the road is never used by anyone, but lets pass on that for now.

Things are never as simple as they seem, for the site by the river, we had to go to city hall and the gaurds to see if we needed permits/certs to do what we wanted to do there (turns out we didnt for any public place), and make sure our insurance covered us. No way could we just show up there and play it by ear.

Roy, can you use Frank google maps link to pinpoint where this place is ?

Guys your rights..

The roof is a bit of a risk
But it was only a suggestion..
As for the Rugby grounds it has
a wide open carpark..
I will put the exact coordinates up later
as I'm not quite sure how to do it on my phone..

10/03/2013.
Hi All,
While I am all in favour of seeking out new obs sites locally
and further afield I am totally against the suggested roof site.
In addition to the points made by Simon I would have
to include a whole raft of Health & Safety implecations that would
be involved in putting an untrained crowd on a roof and in the
dark as well. O K so its my building background thats talking
but thats the way I feel about it.
I any case keep the suggestions comeing in there
must be a suitable local site somewhere. I understand that this
viewing is for all members and not just cmte members.
Jerry.
